Incident 1 - The Nine Tenths Rule
Pinkney vs Erskine
a winner takes all contract
“COULD YOU DO UNTO OTHERS BEFORE THEY DO UNTO YOU? COULD YOU TRUST THE WORD OF A STRANGER? COULD YOU TRUST YOURSELF?”
A cat & mouse tale of two wealthy privileged families determined to safeguard all that they own. At the heart of the affair is an unresolved winner-takes-all contract, one created three generations earlier in the offices of Bainbridge & Bainbridge, one that despite the long passage of time still awaits resolution.
Tracking down the whereabouts of a 19th century long nosed Tom Morris putter becomes their all-consuming objective because, as the title implies, possession is nine tenths of the law.
Yet when all is at stake, could you really trust the word of a stranger? Then again, can you really trust yourself?
Incident 2 - Upping the Game
Wilson vs Langley
a tale of design plagiarism
“INVENTION AND APPLICATION ARE TWO ESSENTIALS TO SUCCEED IN LIFE. BUT TO BE GREAT REQUIRES A GIFT.”
When Veronica Wilson discovers her grandfather, Henry Wilson, may have been the un-acclaimed inventor the world’s most successful golf ball, she seeks recognition from The Harley Golf Co. Confronted by denial and intimidation from its rogue MD, and unbeknown to the Chairman of the company, a cover up is in full swing.
Maurice Bainbridge is consulted, but this is no random selection. Henry had seemingly engaged Edward Bainbridge to progress his patent back in the 1930's, one which was mysteriously curtailed.
Had Edward Bainbridge been complicit or negligent? Or might there be another reason - one that lurks hidden in The Bainbridge Diaries?
Incident 3 - The Spoils of Law
Falstaff-Pride vs Bainbridge
a tale of probate subterfuge
“LEAD US NOT INTO TEMPTATION.”
A finger of suspicion is being pointed in Edward Bainbridge’s direction. Was he once involved in an elaborate scam back in the 1930’s, intended to cheat bereaved families? Had he abused his position of trust to take advantage at times of greatest need?
One family very much believes so - and has evidence to prove it. Confronted, Maurice Bainbridge is given an ultimatum - 'make good or pay the price’. But to compound matters the accuser is a fellow professional and an esteemed member of the King’s Counsel with powerful friends in powerful positions.
Maurice Bainbridge becomes embroiled in a scramble for professional survival and his only ally is long dead. Yet along the way he finds reason to doubt all which he had come to accept.
